Matthew Watson

Pastor of Teaching & Outreach

Matthew (he/him) serves as Pastor of Teaching and Outreach at Christ City. His passion is to mobilize people of faith to join in God’s redemptive work in the world. For the past 20 years, this passion has found a home in a variety of settings; nonprofits, churches, universities, and international organizations, but the common theme has been the mobilization of people of faith on behalf of the marginalized people and places of the world. Before pastoring at Christ City, Matthew served on staff with The District Church in Washington, D.C. as well as Mission Pastor with Living Hope Church in Memphis, TN.

In addition to pastoring at Christ City, Matthew also serves as a Church Planting Coach to emerging church planters with the V3 Movement, the church planting arm of the Baptist General Association of Virginia (BGAV).

Matthew holds degrees from Southern Methodist University, Golden Gate Seminary, and a doctorate from Bakke Graduate University where his research focused on churches bridging racial and class divisions.

Matthew is married to an amazing woman of God, Lisa Rodriguez-Watson and together they have 3 children. In his free time, he can be found in the kitchen and over the grill perfecting his slow-smoked ribs.
