It is a familiar and honest question to wonder whether God is near, or whether we are on our own. The Gospel of Matthew answers with the name of Jesus: Emmanuel, God with us. This is the promise Matthew builds his whole account on. The God who is with us comes near in a vulnerable child, gathers an unlikely and expanding people around him, and announces a kingdom that turns the world's arrangements of power and belonging upside down. He keeps company with the overlooked, makes room at the table for the ones on the outside, and stays through suffering and death and beyond. "With Us" is an invitation to sit inside this promise and be changed by it: to know God's nearness in the ordinary and the hard, to follow the Jesus who embodies it, and to become a community that lives as if he is with us, because he is.
