Fourth Sunday in Lent (3/15)
READ: James 5:12
Most important, my brothers and sisters, never make a solemn pledge — neither by heaven nor earth, nor by anything else. Instead, speak with a simple “Yes” or “No,” or else you may fall under judgment.
REFLECT
James calls for simple, trustworthy speech. No elaborate oaths. No swearing by heaven or earth to prove you're telling the truth. Just let your yes be yes and your no be no.
In a city built on press releases and talking points, spin and strategic communication, where truth can be sacrificed on the altar of winning, James's instruction cuts: say what you mean. Mean what you say. Build a life where people don't need you to swear an oath because they already know your word is good.
The issue isn't the oath itself. The issue is needing one. If your character requires elaborate assurances to be believed, something is wrong. James calls us to integrity — where our speech is so consistently truthful that a simple yes or no is enough. This is about becoming people whose words can be trusted.
RESPOND
Notice today if you're embellishing, hedging, or saying what's expedient rather than what's true. Practice simple, honest speech.
PRAY
God, make us people of our word. Let our yes be yes and our no be no. Amen.
