Day 22: Saturday 3/14

READ: James 5:9-11

Don’t complain about each other, brothers and sisters, so that you won’t be judged. Look! The judge is standing at the door! Brothers and sisters, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord as an example of patient resolve and steadfastness. Look at how we honor those who have practiced endurance. You have heard of the endurance of Job. And you have seen what the Lord has accomplished, for the Lord is full of compassion and mercy.

REFLECT

Patience under injustice is hard. When liberation is slow and suffering persists, we are tempted to turn on each other. James warns: don't complain against one another. Instead, he says, look to the prophets. Look to Job. They suffered. They waited. They trusted God even when circumstances suggested otherwise. And the Lord proved compassionate and merciful.

This is the foundation of patient endurance: God's character, not our strength. We wait because we trust the God we are waiting for is good. The prophets knew this. Job discovered it. We are called to the same faithful waiting, held by the same compassionate Lord.

RESPOND

Notice when you're tempted to complain about someone today. Stop and choose gratitude instead.

PRAY

Compassionate Lord, forgive our grumbling about others. Help us trust your mercy even in the waiting. Amen.
