Day 20: Thursday 3/12

READ: James 5:1-6

Pay attention, you wealthy people! Weep and moan over the miseries coming upon you. Your riches have rotted. Moths have destroyed your clothes. Your gold and silver have rusted, and their rust will be evidence against you. It will eat your flesh like fire. Consider the treasure you have hoarded in the last days. Listen! Hear the cries of the wages of your field hands. These are the wages you stole from those who harvested your fields. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of heavenly forces. You have lived a self-satisfying life on this earth, a life of luxury. You have stuffed your hearts in preparation for the day of slaughter. You have condemned and murdered the righteous one, who doesn’t oppose you.

REFLECT

James speaks with prophetic intensity here. His words are directed toward those whose wealth has been built through exploitation — those who hoard while others suffer, who secure luxury by withholding what workers are owed, who benefit from systems that crush the vulnerable. Scripture does not speak abstractly about injustice. It names it plainly.

Many of us are not wealthy in the sense James describes. And yet this text still calls for our attention. It reminds us that God hears the cries of the poor. God sees economic injustice. God stands with those whose labor is exploited and whose dignity is ignored. Again and again, Scripture reveals God’s particular concern for the vulnerable.

This invites us into honesty about our world and our place within it. How do we benefit from systems we did not create but still participate in? How might our lives reflect God’s concern for those who suffer economic injustice? God hears the cries of the vulnerable. James calls us not simply to personal reflection, but likewise to listen, and to align our lives with God’s concern.

RESPOND

Where do you see economic exploitation in your workplace, neighborhood, city or workplace? What would it mean to align yourself with what God hears?

PRAY

God of the exploited, we live in the capital of empire, built on stolen land and sustained by stolen labor. We confess we have grown comfortable in systems that benefit us while crushing others. We have been silent when we should have spoken. Open our ears to hear what you hear. Give us courage to align our lives with your concern for those who suffer injustice. Amen.
